The Challenge....

Awe Deficient

Awe – an overwhelming feeling of reverence, admiration, fear, etc., produced by that which is grand, sublime, extremely powerful, or the like: in awe of God; in awe of great political figures. Archaic. power to inspire fear or reverence.

A feeling of emotion that is strong, breathtaking, knocks us off our feet in wonderment, astonishment, venerating beautiful admiration to what is seen, felt or heard. When is the last time you felt this, any of this? Recently, I visited a friend in Chattanooga and we went to several spots, look outs and saw some pretty amazing things, took pictures of them and although both of us are just amateurs when it comes to photography, we both enjoy the act of capturing the moment and turning it into something more later. For the first few days, because it has been so long since I have used my camera, much less edited any photos I went nuts and added quite a few oh here. Then I got tired and the last ones I went through decided not to edit.

Two things I discovered during this time:

One, I was still in the mindset of rush, rush, rush, let’s grab the shots and move on. No Awe whatsoever, just let us stay busy so we do not have to deal with all this mess that’s going on. A person will miss the awe every time if they are to focused on the end result, missing the journey altogether.

Two, the edit… It could have come from a place of exhaustion but when I began to edit the last pictures, I felt like the awe kicked in. Exhaustion makes you slow down, see what is in front of you, or perhaps makes one lazy. There was nothing I could do to make these pictures more beautiful, it was just a beautiful day, a beautiful sky, beautiful grass. Gods creation, Gods masterpiece. I just happened to capture it.

How often do we try to change Gods creations? Not necessarily in the editing of pictures but in everyday life? Even the way we treat our fellow man, the way we encourage others to be more suitable for our situation. The way we try to use pesticides on our gardens or invent items that make things happen faster or make things easier for us. There are so many things that we do not have control over but so many things that we do especially in this time. Let us make the most of this time we have, slow down, enjoy the coffee, the sunsets, the moments we spend. Let us find the awe of life once again, to have childlike faith and childlike play.
