I have practiced yoga for over twenty years. It is hard but it is so worth it. When I let a few days go by without it and I return to my mat, it is hard to find that quiet, meditation, peaceful feeling but it can be done and it must, at least for me. There is no other place in the world that I feel that offers so much safety than your mat. Yoga allows you to let go of whatever is blocking you, whatever is causing you pain, whatever is holding you back. Granted over the twenty years of practice, I did not know the power of yoga until about two years ago. When my pain became more than I could bear, I found myself with tears streaming down my face in the middle of class and wondering where in the world did that come from. It was okay, I was safe, safely surrounded by twenty-five strangers that most of who knew the power of yoga and they were very pleased with me just figuring it out. I still remember that class like it was just yesterday, the freedom to finally let go of all the mess I had going on inside me. The freedom of not caring who saw me cry. The understanding that we cannot be superwoman all the time. It is okay to release our pain. There is something about that combination of breathe and movement that will allow the release to take place. If it is needed, yoga will allow.
“How Yoga Works” is one of my favorite books. It is a wonderful story that illustrates The Yoga Sutras, which I have not had the enjoyment of reading but hopefully will someday. This book, “How Yoga Works” allows you to get a deeper understanding of the principles behind the movement. A heartfelt story that will leave you longing for more!!! I hope you will check it out and it will inspire you. It definitely made a difference in my life and in my practice.
